Staff benefits
UN Secretariat staff packages follow the UN common system. They include net base pay, relocation and shipment support, UN travel documents, visa facilities, home leave, health insurance, pension participation, and tax or immunity protections for covered officials. Terms vary by appointment category and duty station; dependency status can also matter.
Relocation
The UN may pay travel expenses and relocation shipment for eligible staff members, spouses, and dependent children under staff rules. Appointment type and duty-station movement determine the entitlement. Source
Visa sponsorship
Visa applications for UN officials traveling on United Nations business with a laissez-passer are to be handled as speedily as possible under the privileges convention. Residence processing for a duty station follows local host-country practice. Source
Home leave / paid home travel
Eligible UN staff members receive home leave to maintain family, social, and cultural ties with the home country. The normal cycle is tied to the duty station and can be 24 months or shorter in designated cases. Source
Diplomatic license plate
UN vehicle privileges are handled through host-country protocol and are normally limited to senior officials or accredited posts. Most staff should expect official travel documents rather than diplomatic plates. Source · estimate
Diplomatic document
The UN may issue a United Nations laissez-passer to officials, and member authorities recognize it as a valid travel document for official travel. Staff may also receive other certificates for official missions. Source
Income tax exemption
UN officials are generally exempt from taxation on UN salaries and emoluments under the privileges convention. Some states apply reservations or domestic rules for their own nationals, so personal tax treatment can differ. Source
Functional immunity
UN officials have immunity from legal process for words spoken or written and acts performed in their official capacity. The immunity belongs to the Organization's work and may be waived by the Secretary-General. Source
Airport special lane
UN travel documents can support expedited visa handling and official travel facilities. Airport fast-track access is controlled by the host country or airport, not by a universal UN staff rule. Source · estimate
